HOW I PACK
I would love to say I’m a minimalist packer, but am somewhere in between. I have certainly improved in recent years, mostly because i HATE to check luggage. Why should I pay $50 for someone to lose my bag and take an extra 2 hours out of my day to track it down? My go-to luggage right now is the Away carry-on and a Tumi medium tote bag. The Away case is so durable and comes with a USB charger which has saved my bacon on a couple of occasions. Always last minute, despite best intentions, even for those 6 am flights. There’s nothing like a good panic attack and adrenaline rush when you realize you have to pack and be out the door in 5 minutes to make your flight! While it wakes you up far better than any strong cup of coffee, I still prefer the coffee.
AT THE AIRPORT
I have my own system, although it certainly has its flaws. For domestic flights I get there 45-60 mins before, 75 mins for international flights (i have never understand how some international flights now say 3 hours when 2 hours was already too long). My issue is getting to JFK (my base airport) is so unpredictable it ranges from 30 mins to 90 mins, so i do need to think about this depending on my flight time (tip for travellers: Wednesday/Thursday mid-afternoon times are worst all week and Friday afternoons in summer). So i do try to travel in off peak times (and NEVER again on Thanksgiving). Best thing I have done is TSA PreCheck. For international flights i also have Global Entry, which is a must for those who travel overseas frequently. I’m pretty easy to get through security (although forgetting the odd water bottle will cost me 5 minutes in lost time). I grab a good cup of coffee and a large bottle of water and I’m good to go.
UP IN THE AIR
I’m always in the aisle seat – makes it easier to go to the bathroom and stay hydrated! I go through the following mental checklist once I board the flight. My Tumi bag fits under my seat so I don’t need to worry about overhead space and can be the last to board – no need to spend unnecessary time on a plane. Then when in my seat, I remove my shoes, put on my socks, slip my Bose headphones on, put a bottle of water in the seat pocket, apply moisturizer and a mask on (after all I am the CEO of a skincare business), grab my iPad or magazine for some reading until we hit 10,000 ft, and then switch over to gogo inflight Internet to work (with the occasional cheese box). As we begin to descend, I turn off my computer, close my eyes, and listen to a few tunes to help me reset before getting off the plane. Funnily enough, I’m almost more productive when the in-flight Internet isn’t working, as i can send emails without the distraction of receiving any incoming emails.
I’m sure if someone observed me getting into my seat they would think I am totally OCD.
