Fact. I have a thing for ancillary characters, mythology, and beautiful writing.
Which is why Circe was the perfect book for me.
Focused on life of the goddess Circe, we learn about her childhood, her incredibly dysfunctional family, her role in the mythological pantheon, and get a little bit more insight in the battle between the Titan and the Olympian Gods. We also get intrigue, drama, deeply complicated characters, romance, heartbreak.
Basically, all the hallmarks of a great tragedy.
What I love about Madeline Miller is her ability to be true and respectful of the history, but to create a full world and fully formed characters that you just get lost in. While I read and liked The Song Of Achilles, I loved Circe. I binge read this over the course of a weekend, and was sad it was finished.
Fingers crossed Miller has another novel in the works…
If you enjoyed this, you may also love The Penelopiad, Edith Hamilton’s Mythology (my favorite!), and anything Rick Riordan has written. I share a new book review on Fridays. You can find them all here.
