To Veg or Not to Veg?

It’s coincidental that I read this article on the day of the menu tasting for my wedding.  My menu, unlike Chelsea Clinton’s, is completely vegetarian.  I am, unlike Chelsea, am a certified omnivore.

So why am I going against the grain and serving up a herbivore’s delight at my wedding?

In a word: family.  Both the future husband and I come from families with strict vegetarians.  Our Brahmin upbringing was predominantly vegetarian.  Out of respect for our families, we opted to have a veggie-only menu, with the exception of the cocktail party dinner (provided by the hotel’s buffet restaurant).  While I love butter chicken and lamb biryani, I can put my carnivorous cravings on hold for a few days and serve up dahl makhini, bisibelabath, and plenty of paneer dishes.

The food is also delicious, and filled with mine and the FH’s favorite dishes.  While I’m confident that our guests will not miss the meat, we have made provisions (the hotel’s omnivorous breakfast buffet is included with the room, and its restaurant Okra will be an option for guests who opt out of the provided meal).  However, I think few guests will opt for the buffet when they will have the following delectable options:

Clockwise: Lemongrass soup; Aloo chaat; cake & desserts; chole, dahl makhini, & cauliflower salad

No political statement.  No “it’s my day and I’ll serve what I want to.”  We went veg for our family (and enjoyed the good fortune of having countless vegetarian options for the 3 days).
