Blogterview: Lucille In The Sky

I’m introducing a new (hopefully weekly) feature here on Hitha On The Go – the blogterview.  My Google Reader is subscribed to numerous blogs that I am addicted to for various reasons, and I want to pick the brains of fellow bloggers I admire and find out why they share their lives with the world.

Today, I want to introduce you to Lucy of Lucille In The Sky.  A friend from college, I haven’t seen Lucy since I graduated from UW in 2006 but have kept up with her on her journey in Southeast Asia and now entrepreneurship and motherhood (simultaneously) through her blog.  I am an avid reader of this thoughtful, humorous, honest, and completely addictive blog, and I think you will be too .

1.  When did you start your first blog?

This question makes me sentimental. I started my first blog when I ran away to Thailand in March 2007. I left the country on a one-way ticket to Bangkok to teach, travel, learn, explore other cultures and myself. I stayed in S.E. Asia for 8 months. It was the adventure and the experience of a lifetime. I hope I can do it again someday…like when my kids are all grown up. Luckily, my husband also suffers from incurable wanderlust.

That blog is still on the internet at http://adventuresbylucy.blogspot.com. (Note – I was addicted to this blog as well. It will make any person want to say farewell to the day-to-day and head off on an unknown adventure.)

2.  What blogs/websites do you currently write for?

Currently, I write for Lucille In The Sky, a blog that is provoking people of all ages to follow their dreams and create the life they want to life. And for Herbal Philosophy, the website and blog of my herbal tea business.

3.  What’s your day job?

My day, night and weekend (and everything in between) job is caring for my darling six month old daughter like only a mother can. And of course, creating and selling remedy teas for Herbal Philosophy. Which also tends to be days, nights and weekends.

4.  What was the best post you ever wrote?

Um. Do I have to answer this one? Because I have no idea. But I will choose one anyways because I am reserving my “pass” for question 11. Instead, I’ll call my best post the one I recently wrote about the act of settling down.

But you are allowed to disagree with my selection. Some of my other favorites are:

You’re Not My Mom

How To Obliterate The Green Eyed Monster

I Have A Good Mama

If I Could Do It Over Again

5.  Why do you blog?

I wrote an entire post about this. But I will summarize.

I blog to make sense of this crazy life. I blog for creativity, memories, and to find my voice. Above all, I blog to write.

6.  What social media forums (Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, etc) do you participate in?

Facebook is my favorite and I’ve been a member since 2004. Twitter is slowly growing on me. I try to stay involved in 20 Something Bloggers and The Blog Frog communities as well. I do submit posts to Digg and StumbleUpon, but I am not very active on these sites. There’s only so many minutes in the day.

7.  What keeps you motivated to keep blogging?

The simple act of writing, and connecting with others through my writing. I love comments, I love starting discussions on my blog, I love making new friends, and I love learning from my virtual friends. It’s not that I even need to be motivated because I am addicted to blogging.

Blogging entered my life as a creative outlet, but it’s grown to be so much more than that. It’s now an important part of my life and my sanity.

8.  How do you juggle your day-to-day life with your blog?

I don’t know. It’s a constant struggle. I jot down ideas for posts at all hours. I write blog entries using the Notes function of my iPhone in the car while my husband is driving. Or while I’m standing up and my baby sleeps snuggled against my chest in my carrier (like right now). I get out of bed in the middle of the night when inspiration strikes. It’s never easy, but it’s always worth it.

9.  If you could write for any publication (web or print), what would it be?  Why?

Salon.com. Because this online magazine leans to the left, covers a variety of topics, and always features wildly interesting (and controversial) opinion pieces.

10.  What’s one blog you admire?

Ivy League Insecurities. The blogger, Aidan, recently published her first novel. She is also a mother and former attorney. She is a fantastic writer and she has some great things to say. I rarely miss reading a post.

11.  What are your must-reads?

Can I say pass? I have so many must-reads that I don’t even get to read all of them all the time. And I am constantly adding new blogs to the list. I’d probably end up listing everything in my reader.

12.  What do you do when you’re not at work or writing?

I snuggle with my husband, tickle my stepson, or nurse my daughter. I chat with my friends about life and love. I cook healthy, semi-gourmet meals that usually require a trip to the market. I read a variety of books and magazines. I go for walks. I dream with my husband. I read stories to my children.

13.  What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t yet?

Write a novel.

14.  What are 5 things your readers don’t know about you?

  1. I was not always such a healthy eater. And I still mess up. Regularly.
  2. I have major mommy guilt. No matter how much I do for my daughter, I always worry that it’s not enough.
  3. Although I may be a dreamer now, once upon a time, I was more like a realist.
  4. I worked at Starbucks in 2003.
  5. I took two pregnancy tests that both came back FALSE when I was pregnant with my daughter. I listened to my intuition and kept taking the tests until I got a positive.

15.  Mac or PC?  iPhone, Droid, or BlackBerry?

Mac and iPhone all the way. Even though Apple is greedy.

Thanks for sharing, Lucy!  And go check out her blog.  Now.  You’ll be glad you did.

On another note, I want to thank WordPress for recognizing this post on Freshly Pressed (“the best of 279,158 bloggers,355,866 new posts, 361,781 comments, & 73,934,596 words today on WordPress.com”).  Having recently gone through a “who the hell reads this anyway?” moment, it’s wonderful to be recognized, and I’m immensely grateful.
