I can’t remember the how I stumbled upon 24isthenew25, but I was instantly addicted to Megan’s hilariously honest blog. Â I’ve been a faithful reader of her blog for well over a year now and tell anyone I know with a Tumblr account to follow her blog immediately. Â It’s hard not to want to be friends with this girl and be instantly addicted to her writing. Â Check out her blogterview below.
1. Â When did you start your first blog?
I started my blog, 24 is the new 25, a little over two years ago, on the verge of my twenty-fifth birthday. In July, I turned a ripe old 27. Time flies, right?
2. Â What blogs/websites do you currently write for?
Right now, I write for Crushable and Flavorwire. I also write a weekly column called “Style Girlfriend for Evolution of Style.
3.  What’s your day job?
Super hero. No, I work in advertising in New York City.
4. Â What was the best post you ever wrote?
I wrote a post back in January about a work situation that seemed to strike a nerve with a lot of people. At the time, I was working for a really small agency, and the partners wanted to revamp the website and update it regularly – essentially, turn it into a blog. I volunteered to take on the project, and I wrote about how nervous I had been to speak up and how excited I was to bring my passion for writing and web editing into my “day job.â€
The reaction I got from my readers amazed me – they were so, so excited for me! I think the reason people connected with it so strongly is because everyone wants to feel more empowered in their lives, especially at work where, more often than not, they’re not the head honcho in charge. People wrote me about the jobs they’re stuck in and how my post made them want to look for a new job, or at least a new hobby. One person even told me they were considering going back to school. That my writing could inspire that kind of thought and drive to action, felt awesome.
5. Â Why do you blog?
I blog therefore I am? A half-serious answer, actually. Blogging started out as a way for me to exercise my dormant creative muscles. Since then, my blog has become a source of amusement and interest for some (not that many, Google Analytics doesn’t lie..), and their expectations of fresh content keep me accountable in my writing. Beyond that, I love having a platform, a soap box, a microphone – whenever I want.
6. Â What social media forums (Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, etc) do you participate in?
My blog is hosted on Tumblr, and I’ve met some really interesting people there. I’ve used WordPress but enjoy the social aspect and user interface of Tumblr much better (sorry Hitha!). – No offense Megan.  Wordpress has both its ups and downs…Tumblr is fantastic.
I tweet occasionally, but more the “I had eggos for breakfast and they were delicious†or “Life lesson, never smell your hands in public†variety, rather than the “I saw this really interesting article in the New York Times, here’s a link†kind of way.
Facebook and I have a love-hate relationship. Yes, it can connect me with anyone anywhere on the globe at any time, but it also informs me that my first love just got married, and his new wife is gorgeous. Not that I’m bitter.
I stay off Foursquare for now, though the local coffee shop gives discounts to the mayor, so…we’ll see. I may break.
7. Â What keeps you motivated to keep blogging?
There’s a framed bank receipt in my living room from the very first freelance writing gig I ever had. That receipt marks a watershed moment for me – when I realized I could actually get paid to write. Blogging absolutely set me off in that direction, and every comment I receive saying, “yes, totally, I’ve felt that way too†keeps me going.
Aside from that, when I don’t post for a day, or sometimes just a few hours, my best friend (the oft-mentioned “Tall Meganâ€) will complain. That definitely keeps me motivated.
8. Â How do you juggle your day-to-day life with your blog?
Not always very well! It requires effort to stay disciplined because sometimes all I want to do when I come home is lay on my couch and watch bad tv, but I haven’t written anything substantial for a few days and I know I need to do that. Then again, sometimes I neglect “real†work because there’s a story I really want to share, like my misadventures at the beauty school or confronting a nail clipper on the subway train.
9.  If you could write for any publication (web or print), what would it be? Why?
I love the tone of voice of Marie Claire; it sounds a lot like me actually. Kind of snarky but well-meaning. They’ll have the same “50 shades of red lipstick – which one to choose?!†stories as the other lady mags, but they do it with an eye roll that says “Yes, it’s a little ridiculous, but we love it anyway.â€
Also, if I could be the dedicated recapper for Entertainment Weekly’s TV Watch, I would die happy. Oh, you want three pages worth of what I thought of last night’s Glee? Well, I just left that long of a review on my sister’s answering machine, so..sure.
10. What’s one blog you admire?
What I Wore by Jessica Schroeder (soon-to-be Quirk – best future last name ever, in my opinion). She started out taking daily pictures of her outfits, and listing where she got each piece. Super simple concept, and absurdly compelling. I’ve been following her on Tumblr since I got on there, and since then, she’s been able to quit her day job (she worked in fashion in some respect) and live off her blog. She’s now got a book deal and a steady stream of sponsors. My blog doesn’t have the same clear path to monetization, since I write about whatever pops into my head – and seven times out of ten it’s something about the Jonas Brothers, Justin Bieber or my love of cheese.
11. What are your must-reads?
My morning consists of Gawker, nymag, Entertainment Weekly, NYC The Blog, What Would Tyler Durden Do, The Economist and coffee. Not necessarily in that order.
12. What do you do when you’re not at work or writing?
Sleep!
13. What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t yet?
What a great question! At some point, I’d really like to own my own car.
14. What are 5 things your readers don’t know about you?
- Domesticated animals, including, but not limited to, dogs, cats, guinea pigs and fish, scare the bejeesus out of me.
- I cook a mean lasagna.
- While I can swear like a sailor, the first thing out of my mouth when I’m taken by surprise is “Jeepers.†I have no idea where I picked it up.
- I always have on a ring that belonged to my grandmother, that reminds me to believe in love.
- The “K†stands for Kathleen
15. Mac or PC? iPhone, Droid, or BlackBerry?
Macbook at home, MacBook Pro at work.
Recently converted from my beloved BlackBerry to the iPhone4. Am only now realizing what massive fingers I’ve got.
