Emmy Entertainment

I rarely watch award shows (I do tune into E! for the red carpet coverage), but I was hooked after catching the Glee-tastic opening number of last night’s Emmy awards:

(Gleeks – new season starts on September 21)

Before I share my favorite (and not-so-favorite) looks of the night, here are my favorite moments:

I loved Archie Panjabi’s spoiled character in Bend It Like Beckham, but I love her bad-ass investigator self in The Good Wife even more.  A well-deserved award for a great actress, character, and show.  If you’re not watching The Good Wife, you should be.

Top Chef (finally) won the Emmy for best reality series.  A diehard TC fan, this has been long overdue.

George Clooney’s acceptance speech for his humanitarian award: “I thought maybe there was a way to combine [bad behavior and charity]. I have offered to go to the south Sudan and have, like, a wardrobe malfunction. But it was pointed out to me that I’m 49, and that the consensus was that it’d be upsetting and kind of sad.”

And now…onto the fashion!

Best dressed include:

Black was a big color last night, but the texture and draping of Kelly Osborne’s Tony Ward couture gown was a winner.  Her beaming smile was the perfect accessory to the chic dress.

I love a blinged out gown, and Claire Danes’ Armani Prive gown was pure sparkle perfection.  Paired with simple hair and a few rings, she looked stunning.

Lace, bows, and its pale pink hue make Dianna Aragon’s Carolina Herrara gown a girly dream.  Dianna wears it well, with Cartier earrings and soft upswept hair.

My all-time favorite gown, however, was:

Kyra Sedgewick.  She never gets it wrong.  I love the soft maroon Monique Lhullier gown with her natural wavy locks, the armful of bangles and black cocktail ring, and the soft pink of her clutch.  The look is easy but elegant, and she rocked it out.

And now, for the bad (and ugly):

Lauren, Lauren, Lauren…while I like your dress, I’m not a fan of the shoes (too matchey and severe), your jewelry (no need to wear cocktail rings on neighboring fingers) and hair (was intentionally messy a new trend?  If so, I’m not a fan).  Better luck next time.

I love Anna Pacquin’s edgy style, but this dress couldn’t decide if it was a gladiator’s uniform or a silk nightgown.  While black and gold is usually a failproof combination, this dress just…well, failed.  I do love her shoes, bangles, and hair though.

Again with the messy hair – stars, just say NO.  I also am not a fan of the mullet-esque dress trend that’s short in the front and has a train in the back.  The trend never worked for hair, and it certainly doesn’t work on dresses.  The shiny fabric belongs on a middle America prom dress, not on a Emmy-nominated star’s gown.  January, the color is great…but that’s about it.

Naya – you are a beautiful, talented woman who’s on one of the hottest television shows.  Why do you feel the need to dress up as a pageant wannabe?  Everything is wrong about this look – the dress, the hair…while I appreciate her shoes and bag combo (well done), this whole look is just…wrong.  Fashion crime – go directly to Rachel Zoe’s office.  Do not pass go.  Do not collect $100.

What were your favorite moments and good/bad looks of the Emmys?  Please, let me know more of the bad.  I will definitely be catching Fashion Police on E! tonight to watch Joan and company digest the looks of last night.
