En Route With…Roxy Owens

You may not know Roxy by name (and if you didn’t, now you do).  But you most definitely know her company and their famous bar carts, which have been featured in blogs and magazines since their launch in 2011.  I’ve been a longtime fan of Roxy’s blog but didn’t get around to commenting until I read this post, which had me both laughing and noting down her excellent tips.  Roxy’s jetset lifestyle and her witty writing make it impossible to not have a blog crush on her, and I was thrilled when she offered to be featured on En Route With.  Without further ado, here’s how Roxy travels!

I’m definitely a minimalist when it comes to work. Airport security on multiple occasions has told me I pack light for a girl! Vacations are a different story– the more fun outfits, the better! Work or play, I’m a last minute kinda gal, and I definitely roll. It’s a trick I learned not too long ago, and it’s surprisingly a space saver. I’ve been wearing this sweater lately for my trips - it’s basically presentable pajamas for chilly airports and planes, annnnd I was told I look like “a designer.” I’ll take it.    (Editor’s note – I just picked one up for myself!).  I also pack extra socks, as your feet can get really cold up there! A warm pair, especially if you choose to wear sandals or open toed shoes, are so clutch.  Before jetting off on my last international trip, I downloaded Viber.  It’s been amazing. I can talk to Alan and all my friends state side for free avoiding outrageous roaming charges as long as there is WiFi, which most airports have these days.

Growing up, I traveled internationally a lot as my grandparents lived overseas. With work nowadays, I find myself traveling at least once a month. The hours I log in the air and the patience I have for waiting at my gate have an inverse correlation– the former goes up, the latter goes down. I’m at my gate usually less than hour before take off. If I have time, I’ll sneak in a glass of wine to calm my flying anxiety. It never gets easier!  Investing in TSA-sized beauty products is key both for breezing through security AND taking care of your skin in the air.  I swear by three products in particular.  Ole Henriksen 3 little wonders are great because the pots are small enough to easily stash in your carry-on and include truth serum, night gel, sheer transformation…add in the ultimate eye gel. You’re ready for take-off.  Wheels up! (And when you land you won’t look like Frankenstein’s bride).

I can’t stand the thought of make-up sitting on my face overnight, but small travel bottles always seem to burst mid-air making a mess of my cosmetic bag. Make-up removal wipes aren’t as messy and you don’t have to wash your face in a crowded airport bathroom or the smallest airplane bathroom, like, ever. Love these graprefruit ones by Neutrogena!  I remember seeing mom mist Evian hydrating spray on her face for the first time when I was a little girl on our first international family vaca. The high altitudes aka low humidity environment can dry out your skin and a spritz of this every few hours keeps you fresh and dewy!

On long international flights I watch as many movies as possible, drink as much wine as it is safe at those elevations (one time I fainted in the aisle after two glasses– I can normally down a bottle!!), and sleep if I can.  When crossing multiple time zones everything seems out of whack and I often don’t feel like eating when the food and drinks trolleys come through. I always bring a sleeping mask so I can sneak in uninterrupted ZZZ’s whenever I please, and a neck pillow seals the deal.   I pack my own set of earbud headphones, so I don’t have to use those uncomfortable standard ones that the airline passes out. And so at least Melissa McCarthy can make you laugh after you hit a killer air pocket that results in a 20 foot mid-air free fall and the simultaneous shaking of the plane like it is about to snap in half aka another contributing factor to said meltdown.  As far as food, on my last flight they served korean bimbimbap with ground beef. I picked at the veggies, the fruit, and the bread. You will not find me eating meat or seafood out of a cardboard container! It’s just too risky with the small bathroom situation. I always pack snacks – Fiber One bars being a favorite.  I bring a variety, in the case  ground beef out of a paper tray doesn’t my appetite. I brought a whole box of them my last flight to Asia, and Joseph’s pastor took pity on me after my meltdown and passed a chocolate bar up to my seat :)  On shorter flights I try to work. I always opt for the aisle seat – it was incredibly helpful in this situation.
