To my international readers – please bear with me on today’s overly patriotic post on the United States. Â To my fellow Americans – Happy Independence Day!
My history geekdom is no secret on this blog, but you may not know that American revolutionary history is one of my favorite eras. Â I could tell you more than you ever care to know about my favorite founding fathers (Alexander Hamilton and Benjamin Franklin) and my least favorite (Thomas Jefferson was totally overrated). Â I could bore you with random facts about July 4, 1776 (note – it’s NOT the day we obtained our independence, but rather declared war on Great Britain). Â But I’ll spare you all that and direct you to some entertaining reads on our founding fathers and this historically significant day:
Imagining the Founding Fathers as Geeks (via geeksmash)
Benjamin Franklin: Founding Father of Veganism, and other Presidential Dishes (via Huffington Post)
7 myths about the 4th of July (via Salon)
Little Known Facts about the Founding Fathers (via cracked)
Tonight, we’re whipping up some tacos with friends, watching Independence Day (an annual tradition for us), and catching the fireworks from my apartment. Â I’ve also started re-reading this biography on Alexander Hamilton (I try to read a founding father biography every year – these books on B.Frank, J.Adams, GW, and the year 1776Â are also in the rotation).
I’ll be taking a break tomorrow and am heading to the MoMA (and its infamous Rain Room) with my husband, and wrapping up the day with dinner at The NoMad (been dreaming about this chicken for weeks).  We’ll be relaxing the rest of the weekend, as we both have absolutely manic week ahead of us.
How are you spending today, regardless of where you are? Â Do you have any fun plans this weekend? Â COMMENT below and let me know.
P.S – a huge thank you for the birthday wishes on the blog and via social media – I love you guys!
