Mindy Kaling – My Long Lost Sister?

– can you see the family resemblence? –

I’ve been looking forward to the release of Mindy Kaling’s book since I found out it was going to be published.  Ever since that famed Diwali episode of The Office, I’ve been a firm fan of Kelly Kapoor and lamented she had such limited screen time – until I realized Mindy was a writer and producer of the show.  Which made me admire and adore her more.

This book – wow.  I happily accepted all the stares and looks I received as I guffawed in seat 20A on my NYC -> SFO flight yesterday as I read the book (and read it again).  I also may have wanted to pull a Kristen Wiig (a la Bridesmaids) and get on the intercom to tell people to buy the book immediately (I refrained).  What I marveled was how similar Kaling and I are.  There are the obvious similarities – both raised by Indian immigrants, donned thick, plastic-framed glasses and androgynous haircuts as children, worked hard and went to excellent colleges. There are some other, more personal similarities that drew me to Mindy. We both genuinely  like hanging out with our parents and did so on the weekends in high school.  We both adore pliests (pieces written in a list form – fans of my blog are well-versed in my love for this style).  Both of us prefer to work from bed instead of our desks.  We escape parties without saying good-bye (Kaling cleverly dubs it the “Irish exit”), only to rendevouz with a junk-food treat before heading to bed.  And we’re both overly complimenting to crotchety, grumpy people (I seriously thought I was the only one who did this, but no).

So I’m quite certain that Mindy Kaling is my long-lost sister.  For further proof, go buy her book and read it.  Or just buy her book because you like to laugh (and if you don’t like to laugh, you have other issues, my friend).  And go check out her blog.

And sis, I’d love to share a burger/fries/shake with you the next time you’re in New York, and hit up Sephora

– since we’re sisters and all, that makes me automatically friends with Ellie, BJ, and Rainn, right?  –
