Grapefruit Brûlée

I like it plain. I like it juiced. I like that juiced form with champagne or tequila.

And I especially like it covered in sugar and torched.

Grapefruit brûlée is one of those dishes that looks and sounds impressive, but it’s extraordinarily easy to make. After discovering it at a favorite brunch spot, I began making it at home. It’s a go-to recipe when we host friends for brunch, when my mom is visiting (among other things, we’re both big grapefruit fans), and when I need a little pick me up in the mornings.

I could use one today, if I’m being honest.

All you need is the fruit, raw sugar, and a broiler. And maybe a little bit of patience to let the fruit brûlée properly.

Ingredients

  • Grapefruit
  • 1/2 cup raw sugar

Directions

  • Set oven or toaster oven to broil.
  • Cut the grapefruit in half, and place it cut side down on a clean towel or paper towels for 5 minutes.
  • Pour raw sugar in a shallow bowl. Once the cut side of the grapefruit is dry, place it in the bowl of sugar, cut-side down. Repeat with the other half.
  • Place the grapefruit in a shallow dish and broil it for 8-10 minutes, or until the sugar begins to caramelize.
  • Serve and enjoy!

While you don’t NEED a kitchen torch to make this dish, it certainly helps – and is a lot of fun to use. Grapefruit brûlée would be the perfect dish to serve alongside an avocado toast bar or samosas and mimosas for brunch, or with these simple muffins.

I share a new recipe on Mondays. You can find them all here.
