2009 was a remarkable year for many reasons, one being given the opportunity to interview amazing people and write feature pieces for The Desi Diva.
Hands down, one of my favorite interviews was with the immensely talented and beautiful Falguni Shah, lead singer of Falu. This artist seamlessly weaves classical Indian vocals with modern rock instrumentals to create a sound she calls “Indie Hindi.” Not only is she immensely talented, Falu has a heart of gold and our short phone interview had turned into an hour-long conversation talking about inspiration, our favorite foods, and goals. Falu’s included singing at the White House for President Obama, and as she had come off a recent performance at the Time 100 Gala, singing the Slumdog Millionaire hit “Jai Ho!” with A.R. Rahman, I knew she would accomplish that dream someday.
And she did within the year, performing at the White House State Dinner at the end of 2009. Talk about a killer year. I was thrilled not just for an artist I admire, but also for my dear friend whose excitement and joy I shared.
Having the opportunity to write about Falu and later becoming friends with her was definitely a highlight of mine in 2009. And as good friends support each other, I’m writing to promote Falu’s show at Joe’s Pub on Friday, January 8th in NYC.
Tickets are $15. Joe’s Pub is a fantastic venue. Get your tickets (and reserve a table). And enjoy the show!
