While I’m out on maternity leave, I’ve tapped some of my favorite writers to share a little bit about themselves and their all-time favorite links. Sit back, relax, and enjoy these links. And if you’re curious as to what I’m up to, follow me on Instagram!
In her words – Style Girlfriend first started as a favor to a friend. I was leaving behind an advertising job to kickstart a career in writing just as he was launching a men’s custom suiting company. He wanted more content on his site, and he knew I’d work for free, so he asked me to write a weekly column. “I don’t really know anything about men’s fashion…what would I write about?†I asked. “I dunno, just write about what girls like to see guys wearing.†And a career was born. These days, Style Girlfriend offers guys friendly advice from a female perspective on lifestyle topics like food, fitness, career, and home, in addition to personal style. A virtual style consultation service is in the works, launching later this year to help guys up their game in a one-on-one way. The evolution from a weekly style blog to what it is today happened because while I will always love to tackle questions about cufflinks and the perfect pant roll, I’ve found that talking about clothes is really just an outlet into talking about confidence. Because when you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you can take on the world.
In my words – Most of my New York friendships were born on the Internet. Megan was one of my first blog-turned-IRL buds. An avid follower of her old Tumblr (which still lives in my Feedly), we grabbed brunch during my first weekend as an NYC resident. And ended up spending the rest of the afternoon together, chatting about politics, blogging, our mutual adoration for Willie Geist, and our shared love of music (the good and the teenybopper). I’m in awe of how she’s built up Style Girlfriend in those three years – and am a proud contributor.
Now that you’ve met Megan, check out her favorite links:
- I’m obsessed with The New Potato’s Q&As with tastemakers – everyone from chefs and bloggers to models and athletes. I’ve been trying to hit up People.com less (I really don’t need to hear about the latest Duggar wedding or see pictures of Britney Spears walking out of a Starbucks) so these q&a’s give me at least a little bit of a celeb fix, and I usually come away with some new and interesting trend intel, like a restaurant/workout/smoothie I just *have* to try out.
- Sometimes when I need a boost, I re-read this article on The Hairpin, featuring a starstruck editor’s musings on everything she wishes she had the courage to say when Connie Britton – aka Friday Night Lights’ Tami Taylor, everyone’s favorite fictional mother) – walks into the coffee shop where she’s working from. The creeper over-the-shoulder iPhone picture alone is worthy of a look.
- This is not a suggestion to read one specific article by my friend Rembert Browne, but every article ever. His contributions to Grantland (ESPN’s “Sports Guy†Bill Simmons’ offshoot website) are easily my favorite part of the sports/pop culture site, and that is saying something, because every writer on here is amazing. His writing is clever, hilarious, thought-provoking, and touching – often all in one paragraph.
- I felt like this article was written specifically about me, which is good, considering I am (not just might be) an entrepreneur.
- Who would have thought Cosmo would be pushing feminism further? This New York magazine profile of Cosmopolitan EIC Joanna Coles makes me want to pick up the “Fun Fearless Female†banner and run with it, in stilettos.
- Megan’s home office transformation was a jaw-dropper (in the best way). The girl hustles her ass off, and I’m thrilled that she has a workspace as amazing as she is.
